Peter Mares spent much of his childhood outside. He went on bike rides with his friends from Telfair Elementary School in Pacoima, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. He played marbles on the sidewalk with his four older sisters. He ate cherry tomatoes straight off the vine from his grandmother’s backyard garden.
